Susan Hayward was an American film actress who won an Academy Award for Best Actress in 1959 for her role as Barbara Graham in I Want to Live! She was born as Edythe Marrenner in Brooklyn, New York, in 1917, and started her career as a fashion model. She moved to Hollywood in 1937 to audition for the role of Scarlett O’Hara in Gone with the Wind, but did not get the part. However, she signed a contract with Warner Bros. and changed her name to Susan Hayward. She became known for her dramatic performances in films based on true stories, such as Smash-Up: The Story of a Woman, With a Song in My Heart, and I’ll Cry Tomorrow. She died of brain cancer in 1975.
