Spicy Grilled Tempeh

Spicy Grilled Tempeh

Spicy grilled tempeh is a delicious and protein-packed vegan dish that’s perfect for those who enjoy a bit of heat. Tempeh is marinated in a spicy sauce and then grilled to perfection. Here’s a recipe to make spicy grilled tempeh:

  • 1 package (8 ounces) of tempeh, cut into thin strips or triangles
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce or tamari (for a gluten-free option)
  • 2 tablespoons sriracha sauce (adjust to your desired level of spiciness)
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup or agave nectar
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar or apple cider vinegar
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1/2 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust for more or less heat)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, for grilling
  • Fresh cilantro, for garnish (optional)
  • Lime wedges, for serving (optional)

  1. Prepare the Marinade:
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the soy sauce or tamari, sriracha sauce, maple syrup or agave nectar, rice vinegar or apple cider vinegar, minced garlic, ground cumin, smoked paprika, and cayenne pepper. Mix until all the ingredients are well combined.
  1. Marinate the Tempeh:
  • Place the tempeh strips or triangles in a shallow dish or a resealable plastic bag. Pour the spicy marinade over the tempeh, making sure that all pieces are well coated. Seal the bag or cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to marinate. You can marinate longer for more flavor if desired.
  1. Preheat the Grill:
  • Preheat your grill to medium-high heat. You can also use a grill pan on the stovetop if you don’t have access to an outdoor grill.
  1. Grill the Tempeh:
  • Lightly oil the grill grates or grill pan to prevent sticking. Place the marinated tempeh on the grill and cook for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the tempeh is well-marked and slightly crispy.
  1. Baste with Extra Marinade (Optional):
  • You can baste the tempeh with any remaining marinade while grilling to add extra flavor and heat.
  1. Serve:
  • Remove the spicy grilled tempeh from the grill and transfer it to a serving platter. Garnish with fresh cilantro and serve with lime wedges if desired.
  1. Enjoy:
  • Serve the spicy grilled tempeh hot as a main dish, in sandwiches, wraps, or on top of salads. Enjoy the flavorful and spicy kick!

Spicy grilled tempeh is a versatile dish that can be served in various ways. It’s a great addition to vegan and vegetarian diets, and the spiciness can be adjusted to suit your taste. Pair it with your favorite sides or use it as a protein-rich filling for sandwiches or wraps.
