Crispy Tofu

Crispy tofu is a versatile and delicious plant-based protein that can be used in a variety of dishes, from stir-fries to salads. Achieving a crispy texture requires a few key steps. Here’s a basic recipe for making crispy tofu:

Ingredients:

  • 1 block of extra-firm tofu (14-16 ounces)
  • 2-3 tablespoons vegetable oil (such as canola or grapeseed)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional seasonings (e.g., garlic powder, smoked paprika, soy sauce) for extra flavor

Instructions:

  1. Prep the Tofu:
  • Remove the tofu from its packaging and drain any excess liquid.
  • If you have time, press the tofu to remove even more moisture. Place the tofu between two clean kitchen towels or paper towels. Put something heavy on top, like a cast-iron skillet or a can of beans, and let it press for about 20-30 minutes. This step is optional but helps achieve a crispier texture.
  1. Cut the Tofu:
  • Once pressed, cut the tofu into bite-sized cubes or slices. The size is up to you, but smaller pieces tend to get crispier.
  1. Season the Tofu:
  • Season the tofu with salt, pepper, and any additional seasonings you like. Common choices include garlic powder, smoked paprika, or a splash of soy sauce for extra flavor. Toss the tofu gently to coat it evenly.
  1. Pan-Fry the Tofu:
  • Heat 2-3 tablespoons of vegetable oil in a non-stick skillet or a well-seasoned cast-iron pan over medium-high heat. Make sure the pan is hot before adding the tofu.
  • Carefully add the seasoned tofu pieces in a single layer, making sure they’re not overcrowded. Cook in batches if necessary.
  • Allow the tofu to cook without stirring for 2-3 minutes or until the bottom side turns golden brown and crispy.
  1. Flip and Cook:
  • Use a spatula to flip the tofu pieces to cook the other side. Continue cooking for another 2-3 minutes until that side is crispy and golden as well.
  1. Serve:
  • Once the tofu is crispy and golden all over, remove it from the pan and place it on a plate lined with paper towels to absorb any excess oil.

Now, your crispy tofu is ready to be used in various dishes. You can add it to stir-fries, salads, rice bowls, or serve it with your favorite dipping sauce. It’s a versatile and satisfying plant-based protein option that adds great texture and flavor to your meals. Enjoy!
